I thought it was a joke , but it IS cows!! We are raising too many!!
From a column by Mike Thomas of the Orlando Sentinal:
"Beef...is one of the top three threats facing the entire globe." "Cows emit a staggering 18 percent of the world's greenhouse gases."
"...there are now more cattle than Chinese." "..."1.5 billion."
"Cows burp about once ever 40 seconds." "When you throw in all the toots at the other end, good old Elsie is pumping out about 100 gallons of methane a year...a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide."
"All told, the amount of land in some form of cow production equals about 30 percent of the earth's habitable surface"
"The Australians and New Zealanders ...are getting serious about this." "There have been calls of a carbon tax on cows and red meat, calling it a 'flatulence tax'."
There is a recommendation that Aussies start eating more kangaroo which has, acc . to Scott Joseph , the Sentinal's restaurant critic,
:a distinctly gamey flavor with a texture that is something like liver."
"According to a report by the Cranfield University in England, chicken has the smallest carbon footprint of all meats." "Next comes pork."
What I'd like to know is what did we ever do before we knew about "carbon footprints"?
